Badminton Mounties' JUSTIN BARKHOUSE has won University Athlete of the Week honours for his gritty performance at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national badminton championships that were hosted at Thompson Rivers University, in Kamloops, BC, March 1-3, 2012.

Barkhouse qualified for the national championships for a fourth time this year and put up a feisty battle in the men's doubles category. With partner Bryan Downey they played against five other conferences from across Canada, and lost 21-19, 26-24 to the eventual silver medalists. They beat the Alberta ACAC team in the round robin, and at the end of the competition, Barkhouse won the Black Knight Skills Competition, which was a skills-footwork test against a male and female from every conference at the nationals. Barkhouse finished eight points above his next closest competitor.

A member of the 2011 Nova Scotia Canada Games badminton team as well, Barkhouse has been a four-time national qualifier and ACAA all-star. In 2009, he was the league and the Mounties' Rookie of the Year, and last year was the MVP of the ACAA conference (2010-11).

WOMEN'S HOCKEY MOUNTIES - HOCKEY
Feb. 27-Mar. 5, 2012

After ending on a seven-game winning streak, the women's Hockey Mounties finished the season with a third-place ranking, and a 14-6-4 record. From there the team headed to the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) hockey championships from March 1-4 in Halifax. At the final awards banquet, four Mounties were recognized as best in the league: Meghan Corley-Byrne (1st-team all-star), Lauren Oickle (2nd-team all-star), Emily van Diepen (All-rookie team), and Ashlyn Somers (Sportsmanship).

The awards banquet was just the beginning of a great weekend as the Mounties played STU first (a team that had just lost 5-0 to Moncton). While they lost to STU, it was by a 2-1 score, and in overtime. Morrell, PEI resident, Emily van Diepen was the Player of the Game in this match-up.

In their next game, the Mounties were paired up against Université de Moncton, who were previously ranked sixth in Canada. The arena was packed with enthusiastic fans as the Mounties found themselves down 4-2 at the beginning of the third period. But, determinedly, the Sackville squad returned to score three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to edge Les Aigles Bleues 5-4, and clinch a spot in the final game on Sunday. Berwick, NS player Katelyn Morton was honoured as the Player of the Game as she scored a hat trick to help with the win. It was her second hat trick in three games.

Emotionally and physically spent from Saturday's 5-4 victory over Moncton, the Mounties worked hard in the final game but never seemed to generate any offence against the Island team, which won 3-0. In this final, van Diepen again was selected as a Player of the Game. She and Morton were also chosen as members of the tournament all-star squad.

Though the final game was lost, the Mounties had a great season. One that will be remembered by all who were involved with it.

ERIC FREEMAN - BADMINTON
Feb. 13-Feb. 20, 2012

Photo of Eric Freeman.

Eric Freeman of the Badminton Mounties put up an exciting battle in the ever-tough men's singles category, and as well, was a major factor in securing a Mount Allison men's doubles victory for the team win.

Freeman headed into the championships knowing he would have to fight to win every point. He secured the ACAA banner on Saturday for the Mounties by clinching the championship winning points, in men's doubles. On Sunday he faced two opponents whom he had never beaten in league play. He fought hard, playing the best badminton of his career and beat Nick Stewart of King's, 21-7 and 26-24. He then faced Ryan LaBelle, a former Canada Games player and this year's league Rookie of the Year. Though he lost 19-21 and 15-21, Freeman left it all out on the court, according to his coach, Dan Wortman.

"In that match Eric played better than any of us had ever seen him play," said Wortman. "He didn't give up on a single point, and he earned the respect of everyone in the gym. Most importantly, he was gracious in his narrow loss and deserves this award because he embodies every characteristic an athlete should. He peaked at the right time, he gave it everything he could, and he was a supreme sport, even in defeat. He deserves a trip to these nationals just as much as the rest of our team members."

Freeman, the badminton team's 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, is in third-year international relations, and comes to Mount Allison from Loyalist Collegiate Vocational Institute in Kingston, ON.

Other Athlete of the Week nominees were: Lauren Oickle (hockey), Vanessa Gray (volleyball), Kevin Monaghan (basketball), and Mackenzie Gray (basketball).

The women's doubles team of Carrie Drake and Erin Stewart are Mount Allison's Female Athletes of the Week for the exciting victories they pulled off this past ACAA Badminton Championships weekend, held at the University of King's College (UKC), in Halifax.

After a heartbreaking loss in the national qualifiers last year, Drake and Stewart began the season determined to beat the doubles team from UKC and earn a spot at the national championships. They had never defeated the team from King's, and they started the 2011-12 season off with a loss to them at the Université Sainte-Anne (USA). Drake and Stewart demonstrated a huge amount of dedication, both at practice and on their own time and finally beat King's for the first time earlier this year.

At the ACAA championships this past weekend, they contributed to a Mount Allison team victory on Saturday, winning both of their respective categories. On Sunday, they faced their rivals in a match that would determine who represented the ACAA at the nationals. They pulled through against their long-time rivals winning 22-20, 18-21, and 21-19, and earning a spot for the Mounties at the national tournament in Kamloops, BC.

Drake of Stratford, PEI, and Stewart from Troy, NS, have been doubles partners for the past two seasons. Drake was the Badminton Mounties' Rookie of the Year in 2011, is in third-year biology, and a past player with Charlottetown Rural High.
