MOUNT ALLISON’S LAURIE MARCHBANK WINS 2009-10 ALL-CANADIAN VOLLEYBALL HONOURS
This past weekend Mount Allison’s Laurie Marchbank received All-Canadian honours at the 2009-10 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National Volleyball Championships Awards Banquet, hosted by Cégep de l’Outaouais in Gatineau, Québec,. Marchbank was the volleyball conference’s MVP of the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) this last season, and as well was a first-team all-star.
The Mounties’ libero who hails from Kensington, PEI, won MVP of the league honours as the team’s fifth-year defensive wizard. Also named as the University's Mountie of the Month in January, she led her team with 291 digs over the season (4.55 per game), and an 85 per cent serve receive average. She is a former student from Kensington Intermediate Senior High School where she previously captained the basketball team and was a PEI volleyball all-star and captain with her school team coached by Richard Yonker. As well, she is a past member with the 2003 winter games, and the 2005 Summer Canada Games teams coached by former Mountie all-star Lynn Boudreau.
Last year with the Mounties, Marchbank was a second-team all-star in the ACAA and along with her Mountie teammates represented the league at the national championships.
On pace for a Dean’s List standing, she will graduate from Mount Allison in May with a degree in Commerce and hopes to continue her studies in an MBA program, concentrating on sales and advertising.

Hockey Mountie Jillian Greene Named 2009-10 AUS James Bayer Award Nominee
The Mounties' women's ice hockey captain, Jillian Greene, was recently named Mount Allison's 2009-10 candidate for the Atlantic University Sport's (AUS) James Bayer Memorial Scholarship Award. The Award was established in 1985 by the family and friends of Mr. Bayer and is awarded annually to an outstanding student athlete in Atlantic University Sport for excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, sportsmanship, and citizenship. This memorial scholarship is the most prestigious award offered annually by Atlantic University Sport with each university in the conference submitting a deserving nominee.
Jillian Greene is from Tilting, Newfoundland / Labrador and entered Mount Allison in the fall of 2006 from the Hill School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a top student in that school and also captain of the school's hockey team. Jill will be graduating from Mount Allison in May 2010 with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biochemistry and minoring in biology. She has applied to Memorial University's medical school and recently travelled to St. John's for an interview.
While at Mount Allison she has provided leadership and been involved in numerous volunteer activities. She was the founder and President of the Mounties in Motion program — a program which provides tutoring and mentorship to public school students in the Sackville area. She has also been very active in fund raising for Parkinsons through the Pancakes for Parkinsons program. She has been active in the Canadian Blood Services program for two years and has been a note taker and tutor for Mount Allison's Meighen Centre. A committee member on Mount Allison's Academic Judicial Committee, Jillian has also been a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Academic All-Canadian.
Jill represented Newfoundland and Labrador in hockey for various age group teams prior to coming to Mount Allison. In 2008-09 she was an alternate captain of Mount A's Varsity Hockey Mounties and in 2009-10 was the team captain.
Coach Zach Ball and her teammates are very proud of her accomplishments while at Mount Allison.

Sports News: MTA Athlete of the Week (Mar. 1 to Mar. 8) - Carrie & Heather Murray - Badminton

MOUNT ALLISON ATHLETES OF THE WEEK (MARCH 1-8, 2010)
Sponsored by Joey's Pizza and Pasta
CARRIE and HEATHER MURRAY — BADMINTON
MOUNT ALLISON'S BADMINTON SISTERS WIN AWARD AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mount Allison's women’s doubles players, Carrie and Heather Murray, were honoured with the National Fair Play Award while at the National Badminton Championships at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) on March 4-6. The pair played a round robin series with teams from across Canada. Against very strong competition the girls were out played by the strong western teams, but were very competitive with a near upset over the Ontario team, and then took two convincing wins over the Alberta host team, to end their national ranking in fifth place overall.
Mount Allison was also represented at the national tournament in men’s doubles and men’s singles with brothers Brent and Justin Barkhouse, and singles player Braden Freeman. The three players had a realistic opportunity to be in contention for a bronze medal, but their hopes were dashed with two very close losses against the Alberta host team and Ontario.
Carrie and Heather, the previous week, won the right to advance to the nationals by first winning the ACAA team championships title and then defeating all competitors in the national qualifying tournament on day-two of the Atlantic championships held at Mount Allison.
Residents of Belleisle, NS, both athletes are former standouts with Annapolis West Education Centre and the Annapolis Royal Badminton Club. Carrie was coached by Mike Scott while in high school, and was winner of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award, and three Coach’s Choice Awards in softball, swimming, and badminton. When she arrived at Mount Allison, Carrie continued her winning ways, capturing the Mounties’ Badminton Rookie of the Year in 2006-07, and the team’s Female MVP in 2007-09.
Heather was her high school’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2007-08, her team’s MVP in 2004-05, and the winner of numerous fair play, leadership, and coach’s choice awards over the past five seasons. In her first year at Mount Allison, she captured the women’s doubles championships with her sister and was named the ACAA Female Rookie of the Year for 2008-09. This season she was named the CCAA (Canadian Colleges Athletic Association) Badminton player of the month for January, and was also named again to the ACAA All-Conference team for a second consecutive year.
Fourth-year Mountie Carrie is enrolled in English while her second-year sister Heather is in Mount Allison’s science program studying psychology.
Also nominated for Athletes of the Week were Lauren Antworth (basketball) and Akil Smith (basketball).
